I was surprised with Ghyll Scrambling for my hen do and I couldn’t have been happier! I laughed so much, and had an amazing time during the activity. Emma and Brian were incredible! Super friendly and made us feel so safe. Once we’d finished I got another surprise of homemade brownies, Prosecco and a chance to play with their cutie dog. Thank you, Emma and Brian, for an amazing morning canyoning! We went as a pair and were complete beginners, but they made us feel comfortable and confident from the start. They struck the perfect balance between keeping everything safe while still making the experience exciting and adventurous. Had a fantastic Ghyll Scrambling experience with Rocqua Adventures this past weekend. 4 in our group as part of a group of 8. A few ot us had done it before, and some newbies. Very well organised session, excellent equipement and in a beautiful location. Emma and Brian are brilliant guides, setting everyone ay ease and clearly explaining each and every obstacle as we went, along with some really interesting local information about the old mines and how the ghyll came to be. The scramble itself was brilliant fun, with lots of slides through the rocks and jumps in to deeper pools. It was an awesome afternoon, and I would recommend it to anyone. Absolutely brilliant morning ghyll scrambling with Emma. From arrival, we felt like we were in safe hands. We were a party of 7 - two adults and 5 kids between 10-15 and we loved it. Despite the initial shock of the coolness of the water, the wetsuits were great and the slides and jumps had enough variety to keep everyone confident but also challenged. Just back from a fantastic and memorable afternoon with Emma Ghyll Scrambling near Keswick. Emma was such a knowledgeable, friendly and fun guide. All 5 of us, myself, husband and 3 kids aged 14, 11 and 8 were grinning and laughing the whole adventure whether scrambling down waterfalls or totally submerged in beautiful mountain water! My wife, 20-year old daughter, 16-year old son and 51 year old me, all had a brilliant time Ghyll Scrambling.  Emma from Rocqua Adventures guided down the ravine skillfully,  showing us how to navigate the rocks and natural slides, and ensuring we were safe and most importantly, enjoying ourselves. After receiving a safety briefing from your instructor and suiting up, you’ll descend the steepest section of Stoneycroft Ghyll by abseiling, scrambling, jumping and sliding—all while immersing yourself in scenery that can’t be seen from a footpath. Guided by Rocqua Adventures, this unforgettable canyoning adventure offers a unique way to experience one of the Lake District’s most spectacular hidden gorges in a fun, safe and exciting way.

As you descend deeper into Stoneycroft Ghyll, you’ll not only learn new canyoning skills but also discover the fascinating mining history that helped shape this unique landscape. Your instructor will share stories and local knowledge throughout the adventure.

Canyoning in Keswick – Activity Details:

• Start times available: Morning: 9am / Afternoon: 1pm 
• Duration: Approximately 2-3 hours (Depending on group size and ability)
• Ratio: Minimum of 2 person. Maximum of 8 persons (For larger groups please contact us for details)
• Minimum age: 14 years old, Lower ages available for private bookings (Under 18s must be supervised and accompanied on the activity by a paying parent/guardian)
• Weight limit: 18 stone maximum

Equipment Provided:

• Wetsuit
• Helmet
• Harness
• A friendly instructor to guide you!

What you will need to bring with you:

• Your own transport to and from the activity site. Your instructor will meet you there
• Old trainers or boots with a hard sole and a high ankle support (Wetsuit shoes or boots are not appropriate)
• Swimwear to go underneath your wetsuit
• Extra layers to keep you warm after your activity (i.e. Fleece woolly, hat, gloves, etc.)
• Towels
• Any medical items you may require (i.e. Inhaler, EpiPen, etc.). Please tell your instructor if you have any medical requirement before you start your activity

Please note: Only bring shoes and clothing for your activity that you don’t mind getting wet and/or dirty. We are not responsible for supplying these items of clothing, we will only supply the safety equipment listed above. As this activity takes place out in the countryside, there are no toilet facilities at this location.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CANYONING AND GHYLL SCRAMBLING?

While both activities involve exploring rivers and waterfalls, canyoning is generally a more committing adventure. Canyons are often steeper, with fewer opportunities to leave once you’ve started, and many require ropes, harnesses and abseiling to descend safely. Every canyon is different, but canyoning typically involves scrambling, swimming, jumping, sliding and, where needed, abseiling. Our Canyoning in Keswick adventure takes place in the spectacular Stoneycroft Ghyll, where our experienced instructors will guide you safely through every stage of the descent.

IS CANYONING IN KESWICK SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?

Yes. Our Canyoning in Keswick adventure is suitable for adventurous beginners as well as those with previous experience. Before entering the canyon, you’ll receive a full safety briefing and be guided by experienced instructors throughout the activity. Every obstacle is explained clearly, and we’ll help you build confidence as you progress through the canyon.

DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SWIM?

No, but you should be comfortable in the water. There is only one short section where you may need to swim a couple of metres. Your wetsuit provides natural buoyancy, and your instructor will guide you throughout the activity.
